Have you ever wanted to tell a friend or acquaintance what you really thought about them, but you don’t want to own up to it? Good news, Sarahah, an anonymous messaging app, is ready for you to download.
Sarahah, created by Saudi programmer Zain al-Abidin Tawfiq, launched in February and garnered a strong user base in Egypt, Tunisia and Saudi Arabia, but it arrived in the Apple App Store in June. Currently, Sarahah is trending in the App Store, thanks to the teens (the app’s main demographic) linking to it on their Instagram and Snapchat accounts.
Sarahah is an anonymous messaging service. Once a user registers, they can give the link to their friends or post it publicly online and anyone with that link can send them anonymous messages. The recipient has no way of knowing who posted the message or responding to it in any way.
“Sarahah” is the Arabic word for candor or openness, and those are certainly qualities that could be used to describe the many users who are flocking to download a social app that lets them send anonymous messages. Introduced last year by Saudi Arabian developer Zain al-Abidin Tawfiq, Sarahah began as a website intended for employees to give anonymous, honest feedback to their employers. After some success in Arabic-speaking countries, Tawfiq rolled out an English version last month. Like many anonymous messaging apps before it, the new app has caught on rapidly with teens.
The only cause for concern, Turco says, is that Sarahah is basically a complete unknown. Created by Saudi programmer Zain al-Abidin Tawfiq, the app launched in February and first gained a following in the Middle East. But it’s not made by a major company. It’s just a random app that went viral.
Essentially, Turco says his only note of caution is in trusting a new company “without an established reputation or a lot of customer experience.” Most of the user feedback has centered around Sarahah’s facilitation of online bullying, not privacy concerns, but Turco’s advice is to always take a pause before signing up for a new app from a relatively unknown developer.
Fortunately, it’s pretty easy to delete your account.
